26 April - Open now until 13 August 2023, MoMu – Fashion Museum Antwerp presents Man Ray and Fashion - its newest exhibition is highlighting the oeuvre of Man Ray from the perspective of fashion. The exhibition includes photographs Man Ray took for prominent couturiers, such as Paul Poiret, Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel, as well as for important fashion magazines, including Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair and Vogue. As an innovator in his field, Man Ray employed technical ingenuity and humour to ultimately change the way fashion is depicted.

In its newest exhibition, opening April 2023, MoMu will highlight the work of renowned artist Man Ray and his impact on the contemporary fashion landscape.

MoMu, Fashion Museum Antwerp, Spotlights the Fashion Photography of Man Ray

From 22 April through 13 August 2023, MoMu – Fashion Museum Antwerp will be highlighting the oeuvre of Man Ray from the perspective of fashion. The exhibition includes photographs he took for prominent couturiers, such as Paul Poiret, Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel, as well as for important fashion magazines, including Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair and Vogue. As an innovator in his field, Man Ray employed technical ingenuity and humour to ultimately change the way fashion is depicted. His experimental procedures and surrealist winks of the eye brought art and fashion closer together and still influence fashion photography today. Contemporary fashion designers continue to find inspiration in his work, and this is especially true of Belgian fashion designers, with their predilection for Surrealism.

06 December, 2022 - MoMu - Fashion Museum Antwerp, has recently welcomed several newly launched designs by Ann Demeulemeester. This time, they are not her renowned fashion silhouettes, but her latest furniture collection in collaboration with Serax. Situated in the museum's entrance hall is Demeulemester's three-part modular sofa, Frin. This made-to-measure design offers visitors the chance to wait, or to take a pause, in style. Designed for MoMu, the Frin sofa is a continuation of the style and atmosphere of Ann Demeulemeester’s Serax collection.

Exploding Fashion: from 2D to 3D animation, 08 October 2022 - 05 February 2023

Following MoMu - Fashion Museum Antwerp’s inaugural exhibition programme celebrating the 2021 reopening, next up for this Autumn-Winter are two new fascinating exhibitions, both opening from 8th October 2022. Previewed below includes, Exploding Fashion: from 2D to 3D animation, a research project by Central Saint Martins, London, exploring the often overlooked role of the pattern cutter in the design process. Hosted in the other exhibition space, Mirror Mirror, in collaboration with Ghent’s Museum Dr. Guislain., provides visitors with an in-depth investigation into the connections between fashion, psychology, self-image, and identity. Meanwhile, a new rotation of MoMu’s impressive 35,000-piece fashion collection remains on constant display - offering visitors unlimited access to a dynamic and inspiring array of silhouettes and archival material.

August 2022 - 'Exploding Fashion: from 2D to 3D to 3D animation', a new exhibition at MoMu - Fashion Museum Antwerp is a research project at Central Saint Martins (University of the Arts London) that explores how pattern-cutting in twentieth century fashion can be understood through the practices of making, unmaking and remaking. The project ‘explodes’ the mystique of the fashion design process in two ways. Firstly, it deconstructs the myth of the designer as the sole creative genius by uncovering the intriguing role of the pattern cutter. Secondly, it reverse-engineers five historical designs by game-changing designers who were also innovative pattern cutters, digitally reanimating museum objects as moving images which visually narrate how these things were once made, and how they moved on the body. Mirror Mirror - Fashion & the Psyche

August 2022 - Mirror Mirror - Fashion & the Psyche is a joint exhibition by MoMu Fashion Museum Antwerp and Museum Dr. Guislain in Ghent. It investigates the interconnections between fashion, psychology, self-image and identity. How do contemporary fashion designers and artists challenge beauty ideals? Can clothing protect us mentally and give us strength? The exhibition at MoMu puts our personal experience of our bodies centre stage. An unexpected and surprising dialogue between art installations and avant-garde fashion highlights such themes as body dysmorphia, the layered meanings and history of human replicas, such as dolls and mannequins, and the symbiosis between art, fashion and technology in the form of cyborgs and avatars. Apparel and style do not emerge solely from the heads of well-known fashion designers, but can be created in isolation, in the privacy of someone's living room or even a psychiatric hospital. Garments can send a message or be the fulfilment of deep yearnings, and go on to engage in dialogue with the world of fashion. Museum Dr. Guislain brings together exceptional artists, each of whom uses textiles to give themselves a place in the world. Their creations might be hidden to the world, or revealed to just a few, but can also be worn with pride on the catwalk of the street.

After three and a half years of extensive renovations and expansion, MoMu – Fashion Museum Antwerp is now able to permanently welcome visitors, after reopening the doors to its historic Nationalestraat building on September 4, 2021. With the ambitious reopening programme ‘Fashion 2.021 – Antwerp Fashion/Conscious’ as the official kick-off, MoMu is set to become the central fashion culture hub in Antwerp, bringing tomorrow’s fashion world closer to international and national visitors.
